Fosseway Flyer
The bus service along the A46 and A52 between Newark and Nottingham was established by the Newark family firm W Gash & Sons. After the second World War, this prospered on the back of the airfields along the route, particularly at weekends when forces personnel with short period leave and no private transport wanted to get into Nottingham.
With the contraction of services traffic, and the coming of deregulation in the mid 1980s, the firm struggled to survive and eventually had to sell out. The service was then taken over by another local operator, Pathfinder, but this in turn was bought out by Nottingham City Transport. The Newark - Nottingham service proved difficult to maintain on a commercial basis, despite rebranding as the Fosseway Flyer, and at the time of this picture was being operated on contract to the County Council by yet another small firm from the Newark district, Marshalls of Sutton on Trent.
The Fosseway Flyer branding has been retained, and the service does still run 7 days a week.
