1832 saw the 'Great Reform Bill' and Wakefield became entitled to send a Member to Parliament. The first member of Parliament for Wakefield was Daniel Gaskell of Lupset Hall who was elected December 1832. In 1900 a new wing was built at the hospital, provided by Mrs Milnes Gaskell. This ornate stone tablet was placed on the outer wall of the wing in memory of her husband, a benefactor of the hospital.
Another benefactor was Canning Childs. See SE3221 : Canning Childs Outpatients Dept. Clayton Hospital
