Divis Main Station begins a series of planned works to upgrade the site for the digital switchover likely to be between March - September 2012. The refit will mean the erection of a new structure similar in size to the current mast of 152.5 metres that will be able to hold a new digital aerial array and reserve aerial. There will for a period of around 18 months be two masts at this site. The original mast will be strengthened and will be kept in use until after the switchover occurs in the Ulster region. It is likely the original mast will be de-commissioned thus bringing down the one of the oldest TV masts in the United Kingdom and in Ireland. Divis will broadcast a digital ERP of 100kw which will greatly increase its Freeview coverage into all areas of Northern Ireland, increased coverage in Western Scotland and in the South of Ireland. At this time analogue television will cease to exist.
