NT6334 : Smailholm Tower

3 km from Smailholm, Scottish Borders, Great Britain

Smailholm Tower
Smailholm Tower
Home to the ancestors of Sir Walter Scott, this dramatically sited tower house fired his imagination when he was sent as a 'wee sick laddie' to convalesce in the neighbouring farmhouse. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, the tower houses a permanent exhibition of Scott's collection of traditional ballads, not to mention some of the most expansive views of the Borders from the rooftop.
