Snowdon Traction System
Snowdon Traction System
Wheel and axle set of Loco No.6 As can be seen in this example, the traction system used by Snowdon Mountain Railway is the track and pinion system patented by the Swiss engineer Dr.Roman Abt in 1892. A double bladed rack is laid on steel sleepers between the running rails. The racks are laid out of phase so that there are always two pinions in engagement with the rack to provide a positive means of both traction and braking.
