From 2 September 1939 until October 1942 this large field was part of a landing ground and satellite airfield for RAF Marham. It was abandoned in 1942, having been replaced by the new RAF Downham Market aerodrome > Link near the village of Bexwell.

During WW2, a landing ground was established and maintained for the duration of nearly three years in the crop fields to the south of the village.
