Flowerscar Road, Calderdale
Flowerscar Road, Calderdale
Flowerscar Road is shown as a motor road on the 1940s map. Now it's a track favoured by fly tippers. This isn't the worst bit of illegal tipping hereabouts. Come on Calderdale Council get your act together and sort out these morons once and for all.
On 22 November 2010 Phil Champion, Rights of Way officer, Calderdale Council wrote the following to highlight the work that has been done since this photograph was taken:
Flower Scar Road is a remote public road running across the middle of Todmorden Moor. Before the turnpike road was built c.1789 this was probably the main route between Todmorden and Bacup. For many years the moor had been subject to fly tipping. This had reached crisis proportions. In an attempt to deal with the problem, Todmorden Moor Restoration Trust proposed that the road be closed to vehicles. Calderdale Council supported this proposal. Following a public inquiry in Summer 2004, in January 2006 an Order was made to close the middle section of the road to vehicles (excepting pedal cycles and motorcycles). Heavy duty barriers were erected to prevent public vehicular access. In 2006, as a result of a 20,000 grant from WREN/Waste Recycling Group, work began to remove hundreds of tonnes of waste from the moor. This photo was probably taken shortly before work commenced.
