Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri)
A native of Africa and South Asia, the Rose-ringed Parakeet (also known as the Ring-necked Parakeet) has become increasingly established in the wild in the UK, the current population dating from the late 60s, with rapid expansion caused by successful breeding, probably added to by subsequent escapes.

It is thought that the current population consists of up to 30,000 birds, the large proportion being based in South London/Surrey. For a number of years, the main roost was alongside Esher Rugby Club, with an estimated total in 2005 of 7,000 birds. It is therefore not surprising that they are a frequent sight at the nearby Claremont Landscape Garden, where this photo of a male bird (identified by the ring round its neck - females and immatures lack the ring) was taken.

Whilst in small numbers they are an attractive (if exotic) addition to birdlife in suburban gardens, they have the potential to become a pest, with commercial fruit growers particularly at risk. As hole-nesters (see TQ1363 : Rose-ringed Parakeet (Psittacula krameri)), competition for nest sites with native hole-nesting birds is also a potential concern.
