Wembley Sunset
Wembley Sunset
Looking across the houses on Moat Crescent towards Wembley on a very cold January evening in Finchley. The frost has lingered all day as temperatures barely rose above freezing, and can be seen on the grass in the foreground. With no wind to stir the air the smog is being held close to the ground by a temperature inversion.

A temperature inversion occurs when air close to the ground is chilled and becomes cooler with respect to the air above - in these circumstances the normal radiative cycle is suspended close to the ground and smoke lies rather than rising.
