A recent Ancient Monument
At a very remote spot are the remains of a WW II bombing decoy, now designated as an Ancient Monument. The far structure is a thick-walled semi-underground two-roomed chamber, referred to as the 'night shelter' - basically the control centre and pump room. An array of fires around the area simulated a burning oil installation, at some distance from the real installations of Shell Haven and Thames Haven. A scattering of bricks around may be to do with the fire array, but of these no clear trace remains. The near walls were storage bays for drums of fuel. How these were got here is a matter of surmise, but the easiest way would be by barge up Fobbing Creek, which was navigable on the tides until dammed after the 1953 floods.

The far chimney belongs to the aborted Canvey Island oil refinery.
