SK5252 : Former colliery sidings

taken 8 years ago, near to Newstead, Nottinghamshire, Great Britain

Former colliery sidings
Former colliery sidings
This grassy area surrounded by birch trees was the site of Newstead Old Coal Stocking Yard and the site of Newstead Colliery, which closed in 1987. In earlier times, the area was also the site of Annesley Motive Power Depot, so it must have been a train spotters delight. Today, nature has largely taken over again and, under the management of Nottinghamshire County Council, it is of more interest to bird spotters.
