Old field boundary trees
Old field boundary trees
Although this line is still shown as a field boundary on the 1:25000 map, there has been no fence or hedge here for as long as I can remember (and I've lived here 18 years). The Ash trees must have been planted originally as they are all very similar sizes and very evenly spaced - most unlike typical self-sown hedgerow trees. There are two or three in the line that are clearly younger, perhaps planted as replacements for ones that died, and there are a couple of gaps (there's a stump where the fourth tree ought to be, for example). The public footpath follows this side of the line, and turns sharp right where another old field boundary heads off - just about discernible on the aerial photograph, but not visible on the ground unless you know where to look (I missed it entirely the first time I walked this route long before the snow covered all traces). There's not much evidence, even in summer, that this path sees any traffic.
