Dovecote, Bishopstone
The tower/dovecote had a face-lift in 2000/2001. The six hundred year old building, originally one of two defensive towers (converted to a dovecote in the 18th century) was in serious danger of crumbling. After frequent falls of flint and stone, English Heritage were called in to investigate. They found the condition to be worse than originally thought. The outer skin of the building was 'ballooning', caused by weathering and frost damage. A partial grant was agreed with the owners and made available for the complicated repairs that were necessary, both to the exterior and inner walls.
