Completely off her trolley
This public art work by Abigail Fallis entitled 'DNA DL90' has temporarily replaced NZ2463 : Public artwork on Forth Street in its position in Central Square off Forth Street. 'Vulcan' was removed in August 2009 to go on tour along with other works by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. The sculpture 'DNA DL90' was commissioned by the Somerfield supermarket chain showing their support for muscular dystrophy research. Dr James Watson (co-discoverer of DNA and Nobel prize winner) was guest of honour at the official opening of the trolley double-helix on 7 October 2009. The artist is making the point that consumerism is inextricably linked to our genetic make-up and fits with her other work in the use of humour, recycled materials and concerns with current over-consumption.
