Icicles by Sleightholme Beck
Icicles by Sleightholme Beck
Looking across from near the Sleightholme road to Trough Heads farm, over the frozen course of Sleightholme Beck. The bend in the beck cuts through some very shaly rocks to make cliffs on the outside of the bend with south-facing slopes above. A sunny afternoon in a snowy winter produces a continuous seep of meltwater from this slope, falling down the cliffs, which are mostly in the shade. The result is spectacular icicles adorning the whole line of cliffs - the chap just visible on the fenceline by the stream was apparently on a mission to photograph icicles for the Northern Echo. A few minutes earlier he had been quite keen to photograph the ones on my beard as I skied back to my car, but I suspect those were a lot smaller than the ones he had come to see !
