Woodland triangle
Woodland triangle
This triangle of land has been planted, during the last fifteen years, with mainly NE American tree species further away from the photographer, and Western ones this side of the small pond. Some of the smaller plantings are willows which started life as cuttings taken in Utah in 1994, and birches grown from seed collected in what is now the Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument on the same trip. The alder, right of centre, also came from N American seed, but via a commercial nursery, Stone Lane Gardens. The big willow, left, was originally an ornamental one grafted on a rootstock, but the latter has taken over and become 99% of the tree, which is currently being trimmed to reduce its shade and with the eventual hope of removing it completely. Further away are Red, Scarlet and Pin Oaks (Quercus rubra, Q. coccinea, Q. palustris) and two closely related Rowans, Sorbus americana and S. decora, close to a Tamarack, Larix laricina. There's a Vine Maple, Acer circinatum, which is slightly out-of-place, and a few others too small to show in the photo. In the background are some native Ash trees and at the very back, the start of a wooded strip planted entirely with European species, and mostly native ones (several larch are scheduled for thinning and eventual removal).
