The Path Ahead on Ashtead Hill, Merstham, Surrey
The path ran almost straight ahead; covered with a smooth blanket of snow, some six inches deep. Crop stubble, either side of the path, marked where not to walk. This was a new experience for me; a footpath, in the countryside, with no signs of footprints. I returned, by the same route, less than an hour later, humming "Good King Wensleslas". By using my footprints, caused by an even ascent, the descent was relatively easy, despite the gradient. The tune had the correct rhythm for walking.
