Remains of Norman castle tower, Castle Garth
Remains of Norman castle tower, Castle Garth
The first castle in the city, giving it the name 'New Castle', was built by the Norman, Robert Curthose, the eldest son of William the Conqueror, in 1080. Little now remains of his tower which was known to have been built in the Anglo-Saxon cemetery. The cemetery itself was within the remains of the Roman fortress and civilian colony of Pons Aelius. Remains of the cemetery have been found in the current area surrounding Castle Garth. The only relics of the Norman castle are the ditch running from the Black Gate to the railway line and the base of a small stone tower once embedded in the ramparts and now restored under the viaduct, shown in the foreground of this photograph.
The early castle was rebuilt in Medieval times by 12C and early 13C, mainly by Henry II and his son, John. These structures provide the remains clearly visible today at Castle Garth, including the Black Gate, Castle Keep NZ2563 : Black Gate and Keep - Newcastle Upon Tyne and Town Walls NZ2563 : Well below the Castle Keep
