[I didn't give much thought to the identity of the plant when taking the photo, but it appears to be the introduced but fairly common species Dame's-violet (Hesperis matronalis), which is often found, as in this case, on riverbanks. There were individuals with pinkish-violet petals in the same area; compare NZ1365 : Dame's Violet (Hesperis matronalis).]
