Paddling the slot on Witches Step
Paddling the slot on Witches Step
Even at low water, the River Orchy provides much sport and a higher volume than a lot of paddlers are used to. There are several possible lines at the Witches Step, the best seeming to be a boof off the shelf behind the paddler, dropping clear of the turbulent water right at the left edge of the photo. The first person down on our trip took the slot direct and came out of it upright, so this paddler followed the same line. He took something of a beating in the very aerated water at the bottom of the slot. There is also a line on river right, not visible on this photo. Fortunately, this point is also the take-out for the normal trip down the river - it was very cold - yes, that is ice on the rocks in the foreground...
