Cleansing reedbed at Chester Zoo
Cleansing reedbed at Chester Zoo
The elephants, in their nearby enclosure, produce large amounts of water containing much organic matter from their dung. This water is treated in a pool nearby. The reed stems filter off the solid organic matter. The pool itself contains many bacteria and other micro-organisms which, together with oxygen from the plants, oxidise the waste to produce a fairly clean effluent.
