"All Greatness Stands Firm in the Storm"
"All Greatness Stands Firm in the Storm"
This is a piece of public art by Ian Hamilton Finlay. Of the stone piers shown in NS5864 : Former railway bridge, the two furthest from the existing rail bridge are inscribed in Greek and in English; my photo shows the southern pier. The northern one (at the link just cited, the northern pier is the closer of the pair) has the same texts, but with the English version on top.

The texts read as follows:

ΤΑ ΓΑΡ ΔΗ ΜΕΓΑΛΑ
ΠΑΝΤΑ ΕΠΙΣΦΑΛΗ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ
ΛΕΓΟΜΕΝΟΝ ΤΑ ΚΑΛΑ
ΤΩΙ ΟΝΤΙ ΧΑΛΕΠΑ

ALL GREATNESS
STANDS FIRM IN
THE STORM

[The English version is usually said to be a translation of the Greek (I disagree see below), and has been attributed by some to Heidegger. The Greek text itself is taken from book 6 of Plato's "Republic", and reads: τὰ γὰρ δὴ μεγάλα πάντα ἐπισφαλῆ, καὶ τὸ λεγόμενον τὰ καλὰ τῷ ὄντι χαλεπά; these words have been translated as: "for all great things are precarious, and, as the proverb truly says, 'fine things are hard'". In fact, the meaning of the English version is, if anything, directly contrary to that of the original Greek: the English text says that great things endure, while the Greek text says that great things are hard to achieve, and it stresses their instability and impermanence. ἐπισφαλής: "prone to fall, unstable, precarious" (Liddell & Scott, 9ed).]
