Trying to hide
Trying to hide
A very surprised heron is looking at the intruder. At first it does not move at all, then it is making itself very small, hoping not to be seen. After perhaps a minute has passed it slinks away into the high vegetation growing alongside the bank of the stream.

The gate at the start of this track is usually closed and nobody ever walks along here > LinkExternal link.

The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and can also be found in parts of Africa. Herons are large birds that stand 90-100 cm tall, with a wingspan that measures 175-195 centimetres and a weight of one to 2 kilograms. The birds feed on fish and frogs which they catch in shallow water, and insects. Herons will also catch and eat small mammals, reptiles and occasionally small birds. Characteristically it can be seen waiting motionless, or slowly stalking its prey.
