Former Batchelors Foods Factory, Limestone Cottage Lane, Sheffield
Former Batchelors Foods Factory, Limestone Cottage Lane, Sheffield
After discovering a way to can vegetables - including Mushy Peas - William Batchelor formed Batchelors Foods in 1895. Eventually he built a huge factory on Limestone Cottage Lane ... and this picture shows the former office block which fronted the factory. Although the factory buildings are (partly) still in use as small industrial units this office block has been empty for many years, but still retains some of its former character. Batchelors was one of the Big Four employers of Sheffield, all spookily beginning with the letter B ... these are Batchelors, Burdalls (Gravy Salt), Bassetts (Liquorice Allsorts) and the Bl**dy Council! This factory eventually closed (mainly) because of limited road access to the site ... as the lorries bringing in supplies, and taking out finished goods, got bigger and bigger they were unable to get to the site because of a narrow railway bridge and a hairpin bend, both on Limestone Cottage Lane. Follow the links to see both of these features ...
