Common Lock near Fradley, Staffordshire
This shows the bottom mitre gates of this lock on the Trent and Mersey Canal, looking eastwards towards Alrewas. The lock is not a deep one, altering the water level by 4ft 6in (about 1.4 metres).

The canal route was surveyed in 1759, and received parliamentary approval in 1766. Work started immediately, engineered by James Brindley (until his death in 1772) and was completed in 1777, this section from Shugborough to Derwent Mouth being opened by 1770.
