Edward VIII visits Weymouth 1936
Edward VIII visits Weymouth 1936
This picture was taken in November 1936 by my Great Uncle, the Reverend E. V. Tanner, who was a Master at Weymouth College. It shows Edward VIII arriving for a visit to the town, and is taken opposite the Devonshire Buildings- for a more up to date picture of the building see SY6878 : Southern Esplanade - Weymouth by Gillian Moy.
Edward was never crowned King because of his association with, and later marriage to, Mrs Simpson who was both a divorcee and a commoner. Whilst he was Prince of Wales he had a very close association with the town of Weymouth and was very popular with the residents.
