The Garden Lake - 2
The lake was created by Thomas Wildman around 1820 and is bordered by veteran specimens of swamp cyprus, Luscombe oak, medlar and willow. More recent plantings include alder and a memorial swamp cypress planted in 1988 by the Mayor of Missolonghi, the Greek town where the poet Byron died in 1824. The lake is rich in aquatic species including yellow water lily, wild angelica, water figwort, water forget-me-not, bittersweet, corn mint, bulrush, brooklime, lesser pond sedge, soft rush, toad rush, marsh marigold and water mint. Resident waterfowl include ruddy ducks, grey herons and kingfishers.
