The Spanish Garden at Newstead Abbey
The Spanish Garden at Newstead Abbey
The Spanish Garden was laid out by Geraldine Webb in 1896. It has a geometrical design of ornamental flowerbeds enclosed in box hedges and divided by narrow paths (originally of red gravel). The garden takes its name from the well head at the centre, which was copied from a Spanish original. This parterre was once the site of the monastic burial ground and a number of skeletons were said to have been unearthed while the garden was being made.
