Rhyming gate
Rhyming gate
On account of the doggerel scratched into the metal sheet that is folded over its top, this gate earned a passing mention in Louis Stott's book "The Waterfalls of Scotland" (1987), in its entry for "Ishneich" (p174); the metal sheet was originally a sign for a nearby farm.

Be ye man or be ye wummin,
Be ye gaun or be ye cummin,
Be ye early or be ye late,
Aye be sure to shut this gate.

A booklet of walks, published in 1976, also mentions this rhyming gate, which is situated upon an east-west track across Cameron Muir. The prominent hills in the distant background are the Campsies.
Track across Cameron Muir :: NS4783
The track begins at Wester Cameron (NS4583), heads east across open moorland, and ends at the point where it meets the main road at Finnich Toll (NS4984). It forms part of walk number 5 in "The Campsie Fells & Kilpatrick Hills – a map/guide to eight easy to follow walks", which mentions that cattle drovers "used the track over Cameron Muir on their way to the market, or tryst, at Falkirk" in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
