John Betjeman says that the arms in St Swithin's Church at Launcells are those of Charles I, while H. Miles Brown ascribes them to Charles II. In any case, like those in several of the churches in this area they are the work of Michael Chuke of Kilkhampton, a pupil of Grinling Gibbons, unusually executed in deep relief with strapwork decoration. Entrance and exit doorways to the former rood stairway can be seen below and to the right.
