The chapel at Churchill College, Cambridge
The chapel at Churchill College, Cambridge
Churchill, unlike most of the older Cambridge colleges, is not a religious foundation and originally there was no provision for a chapel. The addition of one was greeted with some controversy among certain of the college members and to appease them it was placed at some distance from the main college buildings and is styled the Chapel "at" (rather than "of") Churchill College. The architect was Richard Sheppard and his design, a Byzantine inscribed cross, has been called "a masterpiece of internal space" by Pevsner, who comments on the moving contrast between the forbidding exterior and the peace and harmony of the interior.
