SS2405 : St Swithin's Church

taken 26 years ago, near to Launcells, Cornwall, Great Britain

St Swithin's Church
St Swithin's Church
Ancient churches in the West Country are often sited in remote places, far from a village but recognised as numinous and "thin" in the Celtic tradition. There is usually running water nearby. Launcells is a fine example of a Cornish church secluded in a coombe, or deep wooded valley, with only the barton (fortified farmstead) for company. There is a holy well of St Swithin to the right just beyond the bridge.
