Doorway to Cordwainers' Hall, Blackfriars
Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the church within the grounds of Blackfriars Friary NZ2464 : Blackfriars panorama was demolished and the cloister buildings were taken over by nine of the town's craft companies or Guilds (acting both as a Trade Union and professional body). Cordwainers were shoe-makers or other workers in leather. The Hall was rebuilt in 1843 by John Wardle, dated above the door.
