Grosmont Co-op and Post Office
Grosmont Co-op and Post Office
Grosmont dates from the middle of the 18c. and the coming of the Whitby and Pickering Railway. Before that it was just a collection of small farms. The Co-op and Post Office occupies a building of around this time. It was formerly the Tunnel Inn and had stables for the horses that worked the early railway before the days of steam. In the early days the village was known as Tunnel and acquired its present name of Grosmont soon after it became a boom town following the discovery of local ironstone.
