St Andrew's Churchyard
A panorama from the churchyard looking down Newgate Street. A view of the church, behind the photographer, is here NZ2464 : The Parish Church of St Andrew, Newcastle upon Tyne
The redeveloped Eldon Square Shopping Centre frontage is on the left with Debenhams (whose banner is visible further down the street) due to open in February 2010. On the right of the street you can see part of the Gate (modern leisure complex)nin the distance and the Art Deco Co-op building with its clock tower. The red brick building on the right fronts onto St Andrew's Street (Darn Crook).
The churchyard has graves and memorials to several local worthies: Charles Avison (composer, 1709-17770), Ralph Beilby (silversmith, 1743-1817), Jane Smith (step daughter of John Wesley, 1737-1820), Luke Clennell (artist, 1781-1840), William Chapman, sea captain, 1750-1832).
