Brentmoor Common
This view along the main track through the open area of heath shows the sandy substrate which gives lowland heath its distinctive character. The free-draining nutrient poor soils give rise to a unique eco-system that includes many species of invertebrates that are found nowhere else. Without continuous management these heaths would revert to secondary woodland with the loss of most of the species that make open heathland so important.
