Awkward drop at New House on the Upper Wharfe
Awkward drop at New House on the Upper Wharfe
As the snow starts to melt, rivers start to rise, although the thaw hadn't provided as much water as we had hoped for on this run of the Upper Wharfe through Langstrothdale. There is a gauge just upstream of New House on river right, and this read 0.68m. This is enough to run the section from Beckermonds to Hubberholme, but you would not want much less. The river is more often run at a considerably higher level than seen here. The section is given grade 4, but at this level there are very few spots worthy of that grade. This is the first one encountered, and well worth a quick scout from the bank, river left. The narrow chute drops you onto a ledge where a break-out left is possible (but difficult unless you hit a rock and it happens involuntarily). Neil is just breaking back in to the main flow where he was rapidly turned and shot sideways down the wider lower part of the fall. It's a little easier running through without the breakout, as you can turn and shoot the lower part facing the way the water is going.
