Awkward drop above Deepdale bridge on the Upper Wharfe
This is on the same trip as SD8879 : Awkward drop at New House on the Upper Wharfe, at the same lowish level (0.68m on the gauge upstream of New House) in partial snowmelt. This is the second drop which justifies a grade 4 at this level, a short way downstream, and just above Deepdale Bridge, which is a good place to take photos or video if you are not actually paddling. As with the first drop, inspection from river left is straightforward, but don't land too far downstream, or the ferry glide to make the line may be unattainable. The entry drop is approached from far over on river right at this level, and drops you onto a ledge where the water tries hard to turn you sideways to the next drop. Anticipating this, with some speed over the first bit, it is possible to stay on line and bounce through the stopper below. However, there is a narrow little slot in the entry drop, and not far enough left drops the boat into this, slowing you down and putting you off balance, with no way to make the sharp turn required. A capsize is the likely outcome, but there is no photo here of that occurring, since it was my own run that ended in the minor disaster...
