Air Atlantique Dakota at Blackpool Airport
Air Atlantique specialise in operating classic aircraft, and were based at Blackpool from 1981 to 1984.
In the early 1980s the Ordnance Survey hired an Air Atlantique Dakota to undertake its aerial survey photography throughout the UK. Although vintage even then, the DC3 provided a very stable platform (and sufficiently low speed!) for the photography. The camera was mounted above an aperture in the belly of the aircraft. The camera operator was a member of OS staff and spent the summer based at Blackpool, returning to Southampton for the winter. (Information provided by OLU.)
I believe this aircraft (G-AMCA) was a Douglas C47-B (a military version of the DC-3). It was previously operated by Fairey Surveys Ltd. I believe it is no longer flying but is on static display (as KLM PH-ALR) at Lelystad in the Netherlands. (Updated in 2014.)
The DC-3 first flew in 1935, and became one of the most significant aircraft ever built, due to its use in WWII and the large numbers produced.
