Early drop on the Upper Wharfe
Early drop on the Upper Wharfe
At this level (0.68m on the gauge at New House), the Upper Wharfe is only runnable from a put-on at Beckermonds. Shortly downstream, this is the first of many characteristic small ledge drops that punctuate the descent and account for a lot of the 12m/km gradient of the section from Beckermonds to Hubberholme. Snow was still lying quite low in Wharfedale, so the thaw had raised water levels a lot less than we had hoped for on this trip. However, this level is only rarely a bump and scrape, and provided an ideal introduction to the river for those of us who had not run this section before and might have found more epic levels a bit more intimidating !
