Ruins of St Mary's Abbey church
Ruins of St Mary's Abbey church
The Benedictine abbey at York was founded in 1086 and became the wealthiest religious house in the north of England. The remains seen here are from the second abbey church built in Gothic style between 1270 and 1279, which replaced a smaller Romanesque building. Most of the standing remains are at the north / west end.
