The botanical gardens were created in the 1830s in the grounds of St Mary's Abbey. The Yorkshire Museum on the left was designed by architect William Wilkins in a Greek Revival style and opened in 1830. See also SE5952 : Feeding the squirrels, York Museum Gardens.
