Where Legions and lesser mortals once trod
Where Legions and lesser mortals once trod
This Roman Road from Wharfedale took the Legionaries and auxiliary soldiers to welcome shelter and respite from the hard marches over wild fells in blizzard and biting winds to the fort at Bainbridge just a few miles ahead. Wolf, Bear and wild boar roamed these parts in the days of Caesar. For many a year now the strong dry stone walls have crossed the meadows and high fells. Note the wall on the left (at a right angle to the lane) crossing the field separating rough pasture from green. This wall is parallel with grid line Northing SD87 which is apx 20 yards beyond the wall towards the farm. So be careful not to trip over this grid line when walking this lane they are invisible! There is a wooden gate across the lane in our grid square SD9486 which leads to Carpley Green Farm in the next grid of course. The prominent fell with limestone scars is Addlebrough which over looks Wensleydale. On the fell slopes of Addlebrough and surrounding area there are remains of ancient settlements. No doubt the Romans had their auxiliary soldiers stationed as lookout and signalmen here on the summit of old Addlebrough which may not have been a popular duty in harsh winter conditions!
