The ruined gateway dates from the 15th century, and was probably the entrance to a passage that ran towards the water-gate by the river (behind the photographer's position). The Hospitium building is out of shot to the left. Also note the pile of sarcophagi and other fragments of medieval stonework by the flower bed.
