SH5271 : Big name, little girl

taken 59 years ago, near to Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Isle of Anglesey/Sir Ynys Mon, Wales

Big name, little girl.
Big name, little girl.
Don’t even try pronouncing it unless you speak Welsh! It’s Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (58 letters).
This is the railway station at the village of the same name on the island of Anglesey in Wales situated on the Menai Strait next to the Britannia Bridge and across the strait from Bangor. The village is best known for its name, one of the longest place names in the world. The name means: St Mary's Church (Llanfair) of a hollow (pwll) of white hazel (gwyngyll) near (goger) the swirling whirlpool (y chwyrndrobwll) of the church of St Tysilio (llantysilio) with a red cave ([a]g ogo goch). However, there is a village in Wales called Gorsafawddachaidraigodanheddogleddollonpenrhynareurdraethceredigion (67 letters) but this is well less known. My photo shows the station as it was in 1965.
