SO5139 : Statue of Sir George Cornewall Lewis

taken 8 years ago, near to Hereford, Herefordshire, Great Britain

Statue of Sir George Cornewall Lewis
Statue of Sir George Cornewall Lewis
The statue stands outside the Shire Hall. Sir George, who was born in 1806, was MP for Herefordshire during the years 1847-1852, and for New Radnor from 1855 until his death in 1863. He seems to have lived a busy life and been well thought of. It has been suggested that had he lived, he might have become leader of the Liberal Party instead of Gladstone. There is a marble bust of him in Westminster Abbey, and a large monument to him in New Radnor, Powys.
