Last day on the West Croydon to Wimbledon line
Last day on the West Croydon to Wimbledon line
There used to be a rail service from Wimbledon to West Croydon. The journey time was 17 minutes, but latterly the service interval was one train every 45 minutes, (reason: one train alone could provide all journeys), so no-one could remember the times, and the trains were usually almost empty. The rail service ended on the day of this photograph and the line was converted to a tramway with street running at the Croydon end. Result: There is now a tram each way about every eight minutes and they are very well used, with several extra stops provided.
This photograph shows electric unit 456 024 which was providing the service on the last day of railway operation.
