Drain, Manxey Level
Drain, Manxey Level
Drains on reclaimed marshland have a number of functions; first and foremost they provide drainage for the land and link up with other waterways to remove the water to outfalls on the coast; secondly they provide 'wet fence' boundaries for each reclaimed field; and lastly, they are useful for providing drinking water for cattle and sheep contained within these fields. This unnamed drain separates two fields which according to the 1839 tithe map are Inner Marsh on the left and Wartling Trade Piece to the right beyond the reeds.
