St Mary's Church, Bicton
The church, shown in SY0785 : St Mary's Church and SY0785 : St Mary's church in Bicton Park, seen from the B3178. The lengthy description at LinkExternal link concludes: "The importance of the church ... goes beyond its completeness, quality and landscape value. Lady Rolle employed {John} Hayward, a pioneer architect of the Ecclesiological Movement and this is a good early example of a church which adheres to their principles". Cherry & Pevsner call it "an early demonstration of Camdenian ideals", a reference to the Cambridge Camden Society which was in the vanguard of the Gothic Revival. It was more common for a decaying medieval church to be vigorously restored; in this case, the ruinous older church remains nearby SY0785 : Ruins of the old St Mary's church and the Rolle family mausoleum by the churchyard in Bicton Park.
