NT6858 : Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus)
taken 14 years ago, near to Longformacus, Scottish Borders, Scotland
Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus)
This Red Grouse was perched in a small roadside tree and - rather unlike most grouse I have encountered - was not upset at human presence. Its only attempt to hide from my gaze was to drop to the ground and hide round the back of the base of the tree and move in the opposite direction from which I approached it. Undoubtedly, this behaviour would be as a result of these birds being pushed off the moorlands by continuing thick snow cover. A couple of weeks before this sighting, there was a report of a flock of 2000 near Faseny Bridge whilst others have dispersed elsewhere, even being seen on the roofs of homes in Borders villages!
